A newly established community health center in Jackson Heights, Queens, Apicha created a reading corner in their waiting room and hosted a Back-to-School event that included literacy-focused activities and a library card sign-up table.

A community health center in a linguistically diverse neighborhood assembled literacy kits for their patients that consisted of age-appropriate books, literacy-centered activity books, information on community resources, a Duplo Lego set, and crayons. In partnership with the New York Public Library, they directed their patients to monthly literacy events and facilitated membership sign-ups.


NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health - Morrisania

Serving a predominantly Latinx community, this Federally Qualified Health Center revamped their space with literacy-focused posters for their exam rooms, distributed cloth baby books, and hosted events with community partners (including their local library branch and Power of 2 NYC) and other local organizations that offer parenting support and promote early literacy.


NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi

This outpatient pediatric clinic, whose patients’ families often struggle to meet their most basic needs, developed a new program focused on school readiness. Using vaccine visits to target 4-year-olds entering pre-school, they put together backpacks containing foam letters, alphabet puzzles, letter books, and small whiteboards.

With few supplemental educational programs for young children in Far Rockaway, this outpatient pediatric clinic created literacy packets that contained flashcards, two picture books, a set of bilingual books, information on how to obtain a library card, and other literacy support resources.
