An independent, community-based health center on the Lower East Side of Manhattan launched pediatric literacy monthly workshops for the whole family to help educate parents/caregivers on the importance of reading to young children consistently and modeling reading-aloud sessions, while providing two-generational support.


Bronx Community Health Network, Inc. (BCHN)

A non-profit, community-based organization and Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), serving primarily the Bronx community, established an early childhood literacy project to engage, encourage, and provide direct support to families expressing an interest in learning about early childhood literacy interventions.

A small, family-owned pediatric private practice located in the community of Elmhurst, NY, launched a two-generational approach to teaching early literacy skills that involved the whole family. Using play as a tool for teaching, the practice held weekend sessions based on age group, with books, educational games, and puzzles.

Additionally, a built-in bookcase was constructed in the waiting area to create a lending library where families can exchange books.

High-volume pediatric practice located in East Harlem, NY, actively partnered with the New York Public Library (NYPL) to create a literacy-rich environment with a reading corner in the waiting area specifically designed for young patients and their families, along with the distribution of 120 “literacy kits.”
