United Hospital Fund, through its PEDS Learning Network (PEDS), has partnered with the New York State American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Chapter 3 – Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion committee to deliver the Advancing Equity in Pediatrics (AEP) Training – an adaptation of the Generate and Teach Health Equity Routinely (GATHER) program from Seattle’s Children Hospital. Featuring guest speakers and facilitators who bring both clinical experience and expertise in applying health equity principles, this two-part series training will support NYS child and adolescent health providers in reducing health care disparities and help advance a culture of equity. The program aims to improve participant engagement in equity, diversity, and inclusion, using quality improvement, self reflection, and peer discussion.

The program offers CME to MD, DO, NP, and PA, and American Board of Pediatrics Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Part 2 and Part 4 credits at no cost to the participant. AAP Chapter Membership is preferred but not required.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Participants will use a self-assessment tool and discussions with peers to:

1. Apply concepts and definitions from AEP training to daily work;
2. Recognize barriers to, and develop strategies for, increasing health equity for patients at their institutions;
3. Develop an individual SMART aim for improving health equity.

In keeping with the overall goal of the PEDS Network, the AEP training provides a framework for promoting health equity and reducing health disparities, while emphasizing the importance of building relationships with patients and addressing implicit biases that affect the delivery of health care. The AEP training is a valuable tool for increasing health equity, particularly for those practicing in under-resourced communities where people experience poorer health outcomes that are pervasive and have long-lasting impacts on individuals accessing primary care. The goal of this training is to reduce health care disparities as well as help advance a culture of equity by supporting child health providers across NYS.

PROGRAM FORMAT

This FREE, two-part health equity training series focuses on providing definitions and concepts of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) work and applying the concepts via quality improvement, self reflection, and peer discussions. It is comprised of a variety of learning modules to enhance the participants’ experience and level of engagement. The AEP training is delivered in two-parts:

Part One – Webinars Series (August–September 2023) CME/MOC 2 Credits
A live webinar and two pre-recorded webinars providing foundational EDI content to be completed no later than September 26, 2023.

Participants will be required to submit a brief questionnaire, which includes quiz questions, for each webinar to be eligible for CME/MOC 2 credits. This is also a pre-requisite to advance to Part Two.

Webinar Titles:
• Addressing Microaggressions in Health Care (pre-recorded)
• Recommendations for Dealing with Patient Bias (pre-recorded)
• Health Care Disparities: Do I Play a Role? (September 13, 2023, @ 7PM – 8:15PM)

Register HERE for Part One to receive links to the pre-recorded sessions and the live webinar.

Part Two – Quality Improvement (September–December 2023) MOC 4 Credits
The second part will serve as quality improvement in behavior related to EDI work and as an opportunity for growth and application of the material gained in Part One. Participants who view all Part One webinars, complete the respective questionnaires, and register for Part Two (QI) of the series, will be invited to the mandatory virtual training kick-off on Wednesday, September 27, 2023.

Following the kick-off, participants will join their self-elected cohort for the monthly 60-minute, virtual, peer-driven reflection sessions, each led by local facilitators trained and coached by the Seattle Children’s Hospital GATHER team. Participants will be tasked with pre-work (assigned readings and videos) between sessions, setting a personal aim (SMART tool), and submitting a weekly self-assessment questionnaire about their expertise and discomfort in applying the equity lens in all aspects of their work.

Registration is available to the first 40 participants. Individuals can select their preferred group when registering for Part Two. In an effort to keep the cohorts consistent, and given the sensitive nature of the topics discussed, there will be no makeup sessions. Therefore, once registered, please commit to the date and time. For any extenuating circumstances, please reach out to the team.

To receive MOC4 credit, participants must:
• Attend all three group sessions;
• Submit weekly self-assessment questionnaires between October and December 2023;
• And finally, complete two additional self-assessment questionnaires post training between January and March 2024.

Register HERE for PART Two.
