The New York State CARE (Caregiver Advise, Record, and Enable) Act requires hospitals to give patients the opportunity to name a family caregiver willing to be part of planning for discharge and providing care at home; New York is one of more than 30 states that have adopted similar legislation. A new guide for patients and caregivers-in English, Spanish, Chinese, and Russian, and in full-length and abbreviated versions-explains how the law affects patients and their family caregivers and what they can expect in relationship to it during the hospital stay and on discharge home.
