October 24, 2023—United Hospital Fund announced today that it has elected two new members to its Board of Directors: David J. Erickson, senior vice president and head of community development at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and Kishor Malavade, MD, executive director and medical director, Community Care of Brooklyn IPA, and vice chair of the Maimonides Department of Population Health.
Mr. Erickson joined the Federal Reserve Bank in New York in 2019 after more than 14 years at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. His areas of research include community development finance, affordable housing, economic development, and institutional changes that benefit low-income communities. He has been a leader in the collaboration between the Federal Reserve and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in bringing the health sector together with community development. To date, this collaboration has resulted in 52 conferences and numerous publications, including a cluster of articles in Health Affairs. He is also the author of The Fifth Freedom: Guaranteeing an Opportunity-Rich Childhood for All and The Housing Policy Revolution: Networks and Neighborhoods. Mr. Erickson has a Ph.D. in history from the University of California, Berkeley, with a focus on economic history and public policy. He also holds a master's degree in public policy from Berkeley and an undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College.
In his current role, Dr. Malavade leads the Community Care of Brooklyn IPA’s network of health care and social service providers while also overseeing population health at Maimonides Health. A practicing psychiatrist, he served previously as vice chair of psychiatry at Maimonides. Dr. Malavade played a key role in a citywide collaborative effort under the Delivery System Reform Incentive Payment (DSRIP) program to increase access to mental health and substance use services among high school and college students and provides ongoing clinical support to the Brooklyn Health Home network, which serves Medicaid members with serious mental illness and chronic diseases. Earlier in his career, Dr. Malavade was the director of psychiatric emergency services at Bellevue Hospital Center. He has an M.D. from Cornell University Medical College, completed his residency and fellowship training at NYU School of Medicine, and has a B.A. in English from Wesleyan University.
“We are very honored that David Erickson and Kishor Malavade, both leaders in their fields, have joined our board,” said United Hospital Fund Chair John C. Simons. “Mr. Erickson’s experience in economic development, public policy, and affordable housing, and Dr. Malavade’s expertise in community care and behavioral health, will bring valued perspectives and insights to our board as we continue our mission to build an effective and equitable health care system for every New Yorker.”
