United Hospital Fund Names Two New Vice Presidents, New Controller, Other Staff Changes

Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Sheila Abrams to Retire

NEW YORK, NY—April 6, 2021—United Hospital Fund announced today that Quincy McLain, CPA, its current controller, will be named vice president, chief financial officer, and treasurer, replacing Sheila Abrams, CPA, current senior vice president for administration and finance and treasurer, who is retiring in May. Vaughn R. Murria will be promoted to vice president of human resources from director of human resources, while retaining his title as chief diversity, equity, and inclusion officer.

Both Mr. McLain and Mr. Murria will join UHF’s management committee in their new roles. In addition, Joey Rodriguez, MCSA, who joined UHF in 1987, will be promoted to chief technology and facilities officer from director of information technology. All three appointments will be effective May 4.

UHF also announced the hiring of a new controller, Sherrard Zamore, CPA, effective March 29. Mr. Zamore was formerly assistant vice president, Office of the Comptroller, at Nassau Community College.

Ms. Abrams joined UHF in 2000 and over the past two decades maintained the highest standard of administrative and fiscal professionalism, ensuring institutional stability and navigating far-reaching economic challenges, among them New York City’s post-9/11 financial downturn, the Great Recession of 2008, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Sheila has been crucial to UHF’s success, ensuring that we have the resources and stability to focus on building a better health care system for all New Yorkers,” said UHF Board chair John C. Simons. “Her leadership and mentorship will be sorely missed at UHF, but I very much look forward to working more closely with Quincy and Vaughn. Congratulations to both of them.”

“I cannot thank Sheila enough for all she has done for UHF; I will miss her as a leader, a colleague, and a friend, who has gone above and beyond to strengthen UHF. Her influence will be felt long after she is gone, particularly her championing of our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts launched two years ago,” said UHF president Anthony Shih, MD. “I am excited to continue working with Quincy and Vaughn, and I am also pleased to announce several other staff changes, a mark of UHF’s commitment to pursuing our agenda and strengthening our team despite the challenges of the pandemic.”

Mr. McLain, who joined UHF in July 2019, was previously chief financial officer at The Institutes of Applied Human Dynamics, Inc. He holds a Master of Public Administration in health services financial management from New York University and a Bachelor of Science in accounting from the University of South Carolina-Columbia.

Mr. Murria joined UHF as director of human resources in 2013, having previously served as director of human resources and operations at the Manhattan Borough President’s Office. He holds a Bachelor of Science in human development from Binghamton University-SUNY and a Master of Public Administration from New York University, with a customized specialization in human resources management. He is also a Society for Human Resources Management Senior Certified Professional and holds a Diversity and Inclusion Certificate from Cornell University.

UHF also announced the following staff promotions, effective March 1, 2021:

•    Kevin Mallon, who joined UHF in January 2018, was promoted to program analyst from program assistant.
•    Jatna Rojas was promoted from human resources associate and diversity, equity, and inclusion officer to human resources generalist and diversity, equity, and inclusion officer. She joined UHF in April 2017.
