UHF Senior Vice President Chad Shearer is Named Interim President

Chad Shearer, United Hospital Fund’s Senior Vice President for Policy and Program, has been named interim president effective August 2, 2022, while the search continues for a permanent replacement for Anthony Shih, MD, who will step down August 1 after five years at the helm of UHF.

Mr. Shearer will also continue in his current position, in which he oversees UHF’s work across its three focus areas—coverage and access, quality and efficiency, and clinical-community partnerships—as well as UHF conferences and grantmaking.

Prior to joining UHF in 2014, Mr. Shearer served as deputy director of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s State Health Reform Assistance Network, based at the Princeton School of Public & International Affairs, which coordinated technical assistance to 11 states on the implementation of the Affordable Care Act’s coverage expansion provisions. He was also a lecturer in public affairs at Princeton, teaching a capstone policy workshop.

He has also served as a senior program officer at the Center for Health Care Strategies, where he helped shape its Medicaid Leadership Institute, an intensive training program for selected state Medicaid directors. Before that, he was the legislative director for Congressman Pete Stark (D-CA), Chairman of the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Health in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Mr. Shearer holds both a law degree and a Master of Health Administration from the University of Iowa.
