Governor Andrew Cuomo’s announcement of a set of policies and pilot programs to “Invest When it Matters Most: The First 1,000 Days of Life” is good news for New York’s children and families, to offset Washington’s continued negligence, write UHF President Anthony Shih, MD, and Patricia S. Levinson Fellow Suzanne Brundage, in an Albany Times-Union commentary. The initiative calls on State agencies to place renewed attention on children between birth and age three, the period when 85 percent of brain growth occurs—years that lay the foundation for lifelong physical and mental health, and affect long-term educational and economic outcomes.
